Tour overview

The city of Petra is one of the historical and archaeological cities founded in 312 BC, located in the southern part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, specifically on the slopes of Mount Hor. It is 225 kilometers away from the capital city of Amman. It was once the capital of the ancient Nabatean Kingdom, and was nicknamed the “Rose City” because of the pink colors of its rocks, and also known as the “Lost City”. It is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a witness to the richness and creativity of ancient Arab civilizations. Petra was discovered in 1812 by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

  • It is believed that the city of Petra was inhabited in prehistoric times, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. In the 6th century BC, it was home to the Edomites who excelled in pottery making. Historians agree that the Nabateans, one of the oldest Arab civilizations, carved Petra out of rock in a creative way over two thousand years ago, making it the capital of their kingdom. The Romans also inhabited the city from 106 BC to 395 BC.
  • Petra became rich due to its control of the spice route, which was a major trade route for caravans transporting spices, incense, and textiles from the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and India to the west.
  • The name “Petra” is derived from the Greek word “petros,” which means rocks.
  • Only about 15 percent of the Petra site’s landmarks have been explored by archaeologists, meaning there are still many secrets that need to be uncovered.
  • To enter Petra, you need to pass through a narrow passage called “Al-Siq”, which starts at the dam and ends on the opposite side of the Treasury. It is about 1200 meters long, with a width ranging from 3 meters to 12 meters, and reaches a height of about 80 meters. There are decorations throughout the Siq, including sculptures of gods and animals.
  • “The march” is conducted on foot, or on the backs of animals or carts pulled by them.
  • The site is home to many archaeological landmarks, including the Tomb of the Mislats, the Silk Tomb, the Theater, the Facades Street, the Baptized Street, the Sextus Florentinus Tomb, the Emperor’s Tomb, the Corinthian Tomb, churches, the Temple of the Winged Lions, the Great Temple, and others.
  • The ancient city of Petra in Jordan became one of the New Seven Wonders of the World when it was selected in 2007 by a vote of 100 million people.
  • Famous movies such as The Mummy Returns, Indiana Jones, and The Last Crusade were filmed on-site, increasing the city’s fame and attracting tourists.
  • Surrounding the city are hotels, restaurants, lounges, and shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts.

Its importance to the Jews

The city holds religious and historical significance for the three Abrahamic religions, and Jews believe that it contains the most important and precious secret in their history, which is the Ark of the Covenant, containing the Ten Commandments given by God to Moses, in addition to the presence of Aaron’s staff in it. There is a shrine of Aaron in Petra, on one of its peaks overlooking the ancient city at an elevation of 1353 meters above sea level, the shrine of the Prophet Aaron.

Some Jews also claim to be descendants of Petra, believing that the Torah indicates that the founders of this city were from the lineage of the prophet “Nabut,” the eldest son of the prophet Ishmael. They suggest that wherever it is mentioned in the Torah, it refers to the capital of Edom, the fortified city in the Valley of Moses known as “Petra,” meaning “rock” in Greek.

The Jews refer to the Torah text: “Solomon had seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand stonecutters in the mountains, besides three thousand three hundred who supervised the people doing the work. The king commanded them to quarry large, costly stones to provide a foundation for the temple. They quarried square blocks of stone and shaped them to fit into the temple’s structure.” (Book of Kings)
